Smooth, creamy, and perfectly sweet — this easy vanilla buttercream is ideal for cakes, cupcakes, or cookies. A staple recipe every baker should know.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Vanilla Buttercream Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 24 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • Pinch of salt (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter on medium speed until pale and fluffy (about 3–4 minutes).
  2. Gradually add the powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, mixing on low speed until fully incorporated. Scrape down sides as needed.
  3. Add vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons of cream. Beat on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
  4. Adjust the consistency by adding more cream for a looser frosting or more sugar for a thicker consistency.
  5. Optional: Add a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness.
  6. Use immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Rewhip before using if chilled.
